1 Baking Dish 9x13 inch preferred for baklava
1 Pastry Brush For brushing butter between filo layers
1 Saucepan For preparing the honey syrup
1 Sharp Knife For cutting baklava into diamond shapes
- For Baklava:
- 2 cups walnuts chopped
- 2 cups almonds chopped
- 1 lb filo dough thawed
- 1 cup butter melted
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup honey
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Prepare the Nut Mixture: Combine chopped walnuts, almonds, sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl. Set aside.
Layer the Filo Dough: Grease a baking dish with melted butter. Lay one sheet of filo dough in the dish and brush it with butter. Repeat this process for 6-8 layers.
Add the Nut Mixture: Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the filo layers. Add 4 more layers of buttered filo dough, then repeat with more nuts. Continue layering until all ingredients are used.
Cut and Bake: Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond shapes. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
Prepare the Syrup: While the baklava bakes, combine honey, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes.
Soak the Baklava: Pour the hot syrup over the baked baklava and let it absorb for at least 4 hours before serving.
